I wouldn’t write if I didn’t love language. I was pondering that love this morning considering the following two sentences where a change in one word truly changes an entire sentence, and thus, the entire meaning.
“People want what they can’t have.”
“People want what they don’t have.”
Considering those two sentences and the change from “can’t” to “don’t” tremendously impacts the meaning, changes it altogether. In so doing, it changes the reader’s view of the author writing it or the character speaking or thinking it.
Language is truly amazing. How we learn it, how it is fluid, flowing through us and changing like a river re-routes its path or waves change the coast over time. Language–spoken and unspoken–reveals so much if only we are paying attention.
